Using Candles in Feng Shui Decorating

Using Candles in Feng Shui Decorating
The basic belief behind Feng Shui is that there are five elements, some combinations of which create a productive cycle, and some a destructive cycle. When one of these five elements ? water, wood, fire, earth, and metal, respectively for the productive cycle ? are combined with an element adjacent to the main element, a productive cycle is perpetuated. The reason being that water sustains wood, wood feeds fire, ashes create earth, earth creates metal, and metal holds water. So if you have a room where wood is the main element, it would be good Feng Shui to add a water or fire element to the room, as water feeds wood and wood feeds fire. This is where candles would be a nice touch of good Feng Shui.

A look at the destructive cycle will show which elements do not work well together: water, fire, metal, wood, earth. And we can see that water puts our fire, fire melts metal, metal cuts wood, wood clogs earth, and earth muddies water. Although these elements are generally considered bad Feng Shui combinations, one can be used with an adjacent element in the destructive cycle to minimize an overpowering element. For instance, if a room has overpowering metal elements, maybe filled with modern metal furniture, you can minimize that with wood elements like some green leafy plants, or with fire elements such as red throw pillows, a fireplace, or even candles.

It is beneficial to bear in mind the productive and destructive cycles while decorating, but for optimum Feng Shui, a room would have an equal balance of all five elements ? none being too overpowering. If this isn”t the case and there is not one overpowering element, then the productive cycle is a good place to start when decorating.

Now that we have a basic understanding of the elements, we can see how to best utilize candles in our decorating. In areas with predominately metal or water elements ? rooms which would have a lot of blue or silver colors or metallic furnishings ? a candle would help minimize the overpowering colors and add balance. If you want to start using Feng Shui in a room with no overpowering elements, you could bring in a candle and a complimentary element like a plant or a brown oval rug since that color and shape are associated with the earth element.

Candles can be an easy way to bring a natural element into your home and can be a good starting place for implementing Feng Shui design. Not to mention that scented candles are often great Feng Shui because of the mood-enhancing qualities certain scents have. Candles provide a simple start in creating a pleasant ambiance and good decorating style.

Feng Shui Decorating Guidelines

Feng Shui Decorating Guidelines
The importance of following feng shui decorating guidelines.

Feng shui decorating guidelines show us the correct way to place objects, furniture and how to decorate in order to achieve harmony. Living and working spaces and their decorations affect the people inhabiting them, and feng shui decorating knowledge studies the way to make that factor affect in a positive and harmonic way.

If you want to learn and be able to follow feng shui decorating tips, the first thing to do is to learn about feng shui in general and its main concepts. By learning this, you will find yourself naturally acquiring information on how to decorate any different spaces according to feng shui.

According to feng shui decorating guidelines, the way and the position in which we place our furniture, the colors we choose, the different objects and places we choose for them, everything can be done in a way that ensures harmony. Actually, in China people are used to look for a feng shui expert to guide them in occasions such as when they buy a new house.

Following feng shui decorating guidelines is not the same as decorating in order to make a space pretty or nice looking but it is about making it be in harmony with us. Actually, many times a decoration done by following feng shui would not look nice or be esthetically correct at all. By following feng shui, we could end up doing some of the things we would never have thought to do in our decoration.

For example, the position we place a bed can have main importance according to feng shui decorating tips. A bed should be placed in a position that allows the person to easily look at the door, but at the same time it should not be facing it directly and it should be against a wall. Even if this leads to an option which you wouldn”t have thought of for you to place your bed, you should do so in order to be able to sleep well and comfortable.

Feng shui does not see decoration with the same eyes a merely esthetically based decoration does. Feng shui decorating guidelines are meant to help people make their spaces as much harmonic and positive for their inhabitants as possible, even if esthetics have to be sacrificed for it.

Table Settings for Dinner - Happy Thanksgiving!

Table Settings for Dinner - Happy Thanksgiving!

This posts features table settings from Zara Home. Just
in time for the holidays to give you some ideas for how
to spruce up your table for family and friends. Although,
the themes are not centered around Thanksgiving, it’s
still excellent inspiration all around.
For those of you living in warmer weather,
perhaps an outdoor dinner would be good.
This table setting feels like spring but there are no
rules for setting your own table for any season.
Why not bring some festive color into the mix?
A more formal setting with a twist.

Here’s something a bit more ecelctic.

The same table and chairs in a totally different look with
just putting a table cloth on with different plates and bowls.

This setting reminds me of Napa Valley and wine country ~
understated elegance. It’s like a fancy picnic.

For those of you who like a more modern edge, have no fear.

Here’s a table setting that is leaning
towards an ethnic but organic style.

Louis Ghost chairs and solid white plates.
The ultimate in clean and modern design.

Comfortable with all white? Here’s
a clean but romantic version.
Black and white never goes out of style. The small
black and white teacups are super cute.
The pattern on the placemat gives the overall setting
a neat edge. Nothing like a little drama!

This is a totally cute setting for kids!
Stars and flowers? Why not?

If all you have at home is mismatched
chairs - it can still work beautifully.

A closer look at the table setting.

A laid back and modern setting in fall colors.

I absolutely love this setting - very organic and natural.
You can put your own twist on your table!
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving
and I’ll “see” you on Monday.

More Fantastic Exteriors
After finding my dream home the other day on HGTV’s Rate My Space, I decided to take some time to explore other exteriors that were posted on that site. I’m amazed at some of the homes I found there. Here are a few of my favorites:

This home from angel776 looks like a storybook cottage. Beautiful!

Another picture-perfect cottage. This one belongs to MORGAN-TAYLOR.

Gorgeous, right down to every detail, posted by SDEP.

Posted by TABCAD. I could so picture myself spending hours on that porch, talking, reading, and drinking iced tea.

Yet another stunning cottage. This one belongs to 66nick.

One thing I know for sure is that I am not impressed in the least with the big, huge, sprawling McMansions. I know people spend a ton of money on those homes, but the unfortunate thing is that they all start to look the same to me, and they lack the character that these smaller homes have. I guess bigger isn’t always better (at least in my opinion).

So what do you prefer? Would you rather have something that’s smaller and full of character like the ones above, or would you rather have a McMansion that’s big and sprawling, but lacks the personalized character?

Happy decorating!

Holiday: Gumps

I was in San Francisco a couple of weeks ago for a book signing event ( more on the next week!) which was being held at the beautiful Gump’s store near Union Square. These are some of the photos I took. Above is one of the many spectacular table displays on the second floor where the China and crystal are kept. I thought it was very festive for a Fall dinner or Thanksgiving.

Furniture is also on display in these wonderful vignettes. I love the color combination here with the burnt orange walls and dark grey silk on the Bergere chair and ottoman. The Moroccan tables definitely are on my wish list.

I love the large Foo dogs in this picture arranged with the sofa and live edged coffee table.

I think this “room” was my favorite with the black lacquered display etagere with the blue interior. I like the idea of two matching chairs with different fabrics. And the area rug, luscious silk!

Isn’t this an amazing display of over scaled lanterns? If you are in San Francisco at all during the Holiday Season, do stop in at Gumps. The assortment of Christmas ornaments is to die for, and there is bound to be more than just one thing you won’t be able to live without!

And if you are in the TV watching mood on your Turkey Day, stop on by:

Report from NYC: Little Friends of Printmaking

Report from NYC: Little Friends of Printmaking

The humble print has exploded on the Web as an affordable art work bursting with imagination. I could spend my whole day – and my entire paycheck – buying up prints on Etsy. As the cold winds whip through Wall Street and the art market starts to feel the chill, I take comfort that for a mere $25, I can buy me a heart-stopping little showpiece, like these by the Little Friends of Printmaking.
The Little Friends of Printmaking are the husband-and-wife design team of James and Melissa Buchanan, from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. They make silkscreen prints, usually in batches of no more than a hundred, which they sell on their fabulous website.

Many of their prints start life as posters for music concerts, film festivals and book readings. Okay, so you didn’t actually see Yo La Tengo at Memorial Union Terrace in Madison, Wisconsin, but you feel like you could have been there.

James and Melissa also make art prints that they take on travelling exhibits around the country. I asked James which of his prints were his favourite. “They’re all our children,” he said with mock affection. “I tend to divorce myself from them when they come out of the house.” Jeez, I hope this guy isn’t actually planning to have children any time soon!

Seriously, it’s clear that the Buchanan household must be a fun place. A visit to their website is worthwhile, not only to see their fabulous portfolio of posters, but also to read their zany captions.

Where DO they get all these wacky bolts of imagination? “We watch too much TV. We connect the dots wrong between things,” said James. “We keep a list of all our crazy ideas.”

Not too shabby for a design duo with few prospects after graduating from art school just four years ago. “We were music fans, so when a promoter asked us to make some posters, we thought it would be fun. We didn’t have an inkling we were interested or good at design,” says James.

Have You Considered These Space-Saving Bed Designs To Maximize Your Interior Decorating Space?

Have You Considered These Space-Saving Bed Designs To Maximize Your Interior Decorating Space?
Vertical and functional space planning are two of the most overlooked areas in most households interior design layout. In this article we”ll discuss how to double the functional space in the bedrooms of your house.

Think Vertical

Effective space planning and interior design requires that you plan in three dimensions - so start thinking about the space above your head and higher up on the walls. There are great functional bedding and storage solutions you can use to easily double your floor space in a bedroom and its functional storage space.

Futons for the guest rooms

Why waste the functionality and floor space of a designated guest room when it can normally operate as your den or library? When guests are expected, simply fold down the futon and make it into your guest bedroom.

Loft beds for older children

Loft beds are excellent functional solutions for older children that also want to use their bedroom as a social hangout or study room. A loft bed allows you to place a sofa or study desk underneath the bed. This also creates a great atmosphere under the bed that is private and quiet.

Bunk beds for the youngsters

When there is more than one child in a bedroom bunk beds are a logical solution for using more of the vertical space available in a room, and also creates more space on the floor for playtime.

Murphy beds for studios and 1 bedroom apartments

Murphy beds are a great bed design to incorporate when space is on limited supply. Installing a Murphy bed will instantly open up the room floor space. In small apartments, installing a Murphy bed can have the effect of feeling like you”ve just added another entire room! Murphy beds are also a great option for adding to dens or studies to create a guest room.

High platform beds for more storage

Platform beds are becoming very common now as bed designers switch from using bulky box springs to sleeker and more durable platform supports for bed designs. The old space of a box spring easily creates another vertical foot of potential storage space under your bed. For a regular king size bed, this will create an additional 42 square feet of storage space under the bed.

Air beds for emergency guest rooms

If your spare rooms in the house are dedicated to other functions that you really don”t want to give up, then consider getting an airbed to use when having house guests stay over. Air beds are portable, inflate quickly, and have good support and functionality. You can also get air beds that quick inflate themselves from a small duffel bag.

Trundle beds

Trundle beds are great to have in kids rooms to pull out for sleepovers and can operate as a second temporary bed if the need arises. When not in use it simply slides back under the bed. If you have a trundle bed then you can free up more space in your storage room by getting rid of any fold out cots or beds.

Day beds

Day beds are a functional bedding alternative that also creates a sitting area during the day. Great for apartments, girls rooms, or dens and guest rooms.

Captain’’s beds

To maximize storage space in your child’’s room consider a captain bed. With so many drawers under the higher bed frame you can do away with separate dresser drawers to free up more floor space.

If you start to think vertical in you interior space planning you can be on your way to doubling your useable interior floor space in your home. For more bed resources and design tips you can visit http://www.loft-beds-bunk-beds.com/loft-beds.htm
